Have you fallen in love with the Fixer Upper show on HGTV like everyone else? Want this style for your home but not sure where to start? Well today I will be your official tour guide for navigating your local antique stores.
First off…Phone a Friend!
We all have that friend who excels at making their home inviting, unique, and all pulled together. Call them up and ask them to go shopping with you. That way you can bounce ideas off of each other and let’s be honest, shopping with your friend is more fun than alone!
Don’t Let the Junk Scare you.
At every antique store, especially antique malls, you will find toys, things that should have been thrown away, broken items, and just the ugly. Be ready for it and be willing to dig through it to find those unique vintage pieces. Plus when there’s junk that’s where you can find the deals!
Find the Timeless.
When I think about timeless I think about pieces that have been around for a long time like marble, wood, silver, and copper. These can be found in anything from furniture to accessories. If hunting for furniture, make sure it has good bones. I always look for solid wood, sturdy pieces that have dovetailed drawers. Also don’t worry so much about the finish…this can be changed with a fresh coat of paint! Other classic items to look for are old books, crocks, candlesticks, vintage mirrors, and anything unique that could be hung as artwork like old signage or architectural pieces.
Buy it if you LOVE it.
Not if you have a space for it. You will make a space for it. This is how you fall in love with your home. I seriously have gone through at least 5 coffee tables because I am guilty of living by this concept! I sell the old and bring in the new. This also helps cover the cost of your new purchase.
Now you are ready to find some new pieces for your home! Google local antique stores, grab your friend, and make a day of treasure hunting!
