Don’t let your bookcases or shelves intimidate you. You can do it! I’ve broken it down into 4 easy steps on how you can have stylish bookshelves.
1. Start with your Books
Gather all your hardback books and take off their covers. Make sure the color scheme flows with your house colors, especially the spine of the book. Then stack them periodically in your shelves. Stack some horizontally and others leaning vertically. Leave room for objects around the books.
I like to have a few backdrops for my objects. Such things as artwork, vintage trays, and vintage plates. Having a backdrop will create depth to show off your objects.
Now take inventory of your objects. Sort through your objects and only keep what you love. Also don’t use anything that is smaller than an apple. These tend to look too small and clutter up your shelves.
I like to think in terms of vignettes. A vignette is a small grouping of objects. Normally objects are grouped in numbers of 3 unless the object is large enough to stand alone. Also don’t forget to put objects on top of your books that are stacked horizontally and objects to act as bookends for those leaning vertically.
Step back and look at your bookshelves. Does your eye move over them easily? Are there too many large objects clumped on one side? Try moving objects around and see which way you like it best. I always rearrange and take items away. Don’t skip this step. Editing is when it all comes together beautifully! Sometimes I take a day and come back to it with fresh eyes.
Now you should have beautiful Stylish Shelves! One last tip…while you are shopping or traveling try and find interesting, one of a kind pieces that you can edit your shelves with. This will keep your space fresh! Plus I love looking and seeing an object that brings back a memory from a trip or a shopping day with a friend.
Here is a clock that I just added to my china cabinet that my husband and I picked up on our trip to his hometown in Minnesota. It came out of his old highschool! What a fun addition and wonderful memories it brings my husband.
Hope this brings you some help! Happy Styling!
